County Leitrim

Most of the tourists coming to Ireland content themselves with visiting only the main towns on the coast such as: Dublin, Cork, Galway etc. and at the end of the day, they don't have any time left to visit other areas of Ireland. It looks like County Leitrim is part of the forgotten counties and it deserves to be better known. As the county is the least populated of the island, it has kept a certain authenticity. The county seems divided in two by the Lough Allen. The South East of the county, rather flat, is dominated by the town of Carrick-on-Shannon, whereas the North East of the county has more mountainous and dramatic landscapes.

You will find below and on the right-hand side, some examples of activities to do and sites to visit in County Leitrim, in images and in text.

1. Take a break at Carrick-on-Shannon...
[FreeLike] Carrick-on-Shannon can be your ideal stopping place to discover the rest of the county. The town has several restaurants and pubs, to satisfy your appetite. Other than that, the town can be visited very quickly. Note that the town is known, nationally and internationally, as fisherman's paradise.

2. Visit Parke's Castle...
[EuroLikeLikeLikeOPW] I can't resist encouraging you to visit Parke's Castle on the shores of Lough Gill. This is a restored plantation castle of the early 17th century once the home of Robert Parke and his family. The Courtyard grounds contain evidence of an earlier 16th century tower house structure once owned by Sir Brian O'Rourke. The Castle has been restored using Irish oak and traditional craftsmanship. From the outside of the castle, you'll be able to enjoy a beautiful landscape. Note that the Castle is located only 10 km from the town of Sligo, isn't it worth a little detour?

3. Admire Lough Gill...
[FreeLikeLikeLike] Once you leave the Castle, you'll be able to enjoy a fantastic view of Lough Gill. This lake is over 8 km long and is 2 km wide. Part of it is actually within the borders of County Sligo. You'll be able to see around 20 small islands, of which a few, such as Inishfree, can be visited. A local legend says that one silver bell, which belonged to Sligo Abbey, is located at the bottom of the lake and that only those who have a pure heart can hear it ring. I imagine I have a lot to be forgiven for Smiley...
4. Photograph Glencar Waterfalls...
[FreeLikeLikeLike] Only 10 km from the town of Sligo, you'll find easily the Glencar Waterfalls. This one goes down 15 m along the rock. It is of course less impressive than the one in Powerscourt (County Wicklow) but its location in the middle of a forest and by a lake, creates much more charm. These waterfalls actually inspired the Irish poet WB Yeats in some of his work.
5. Admire Lough Glencar...
[FreeLikeLikeLike]
Glencar waterfalls runs directly towards Lough Glencar, which is pictured. Part of it is actually within the borders of County Sligo. With its green fields and its mountains, the landscape around the lake is really beautiful, even when the weather is grey and hazy.
