Welcome to the Vatican!

Welcome to the smallest country in the World! It may be small but you can't miss the opportunity to visit the Vatican if you are in Roma, even if it's only for a few days. I am not religious myself but it didn't stop me from appreciating the various sites and to be impressed by the ambiance when the Pope appeared on the balcony of St Peter's during my first visit of the Vatican.

If you are planning to spend a day in the Vatican, here are some classic sites you will want to see...

1. Visit Saint Angelo Castle...The Castel San Angelo was built in 139 AD. Before being a museum, it was used as a mausoleum, an army building, a prison and finally as a palace.
2. Look at the statues of the Ponte San Angelo... Ten angels holding instruments of the Passion have been installed on the edge of the bridge.
3. Admire the Ponte di Castel Sant'Angelo...
The bridge, linking the two edges of the Tiber, is now solely pedestrian, and provides a great view of the Castel Sant'Angelo.
4. Enter the Vatican... The entrance of the Vatican is located not far from the Castel Sant'Angelo. After going through this large street, you arrive in the very impressive Saint Peter's Square.

5. Admire St Peter's Basilica... The access to the Basilica is free but the security guards will scan you with a metal detector. This is the same thing if you want to visit the Vatican Museum, your bags must go through the X-Ray machine, just like at the airport.

6. Listen to the Pope... During my first time in the Vatican I was lucky enough to see the Pope (John Paul II) at his window. Yes, it is the little white pixel in the middle of the image...
More seriously, it is the tradition for the Pope to celebrate a public mass on the last Sunday of December.
7. Observe life in the Vatican...This funny little scene was taken by a friend of mine (Sébastien A.) between a swiss guard and a nun.

8. Take photos of the Swiss Army...
It's a well-known fact that The Vatican is protected by the Swiss Army... very colourful, isnt' it?
9. Listen to the Christians singing... Lots of young people were present and were singing songs for the Pope.
