The news seen from Ireland...

After over 9 years living in Ireland, I thought it would be interesting to put together a page describing some of the many events that have taken place in the country which have made an impression on me as a French ex-pat. Please see below for a selection of sporting, cultural, political, artistic, and humorous highlights of Irish life...

Available years:
2007
- 2008 - 2009 - 2010 - 2011 - 2012

2012

Red February 2012... Growing dissatisfaction in Ireland... It's difficult to turn on the TV without seeing images showing dissatisfaction with governments in Europe (Greece, France, Ireland, UK, etc.). Ireland was a country where demonstrations were virtually non-existent when I landed here in 2002. However the recent austerity plans, tax increases (VAT), introduction of new taxes (€100 Household charges, Septic Tank charges, etc.) and generous payments to the Banking Sector have triggered an increase of dissatisfaction nationally. I had the opportunity to go to Dublin in February and it was difficult not to notice the protest camp in front of the Central Bank of Ireland (see photos). Everyone has a thought on the subject, however, it's difficult to remain opinionless when faced with the slogans of the signs.
Protest
February 2012. A generous €1.25 billion cheque from the taxpayers of Ireland to Anglo Irish Banks unsecured bondholders. The bill is hard to swallow!

Red January 2012... "♪I'm dancing in the cold♪♪" Dublin's best known quarter, Temple Bar, welcomed its regular festival of Irish Music and Culture, the TradFest back for the 7th year in a roll. Despite of the cold, it was great to walk through Temple Bar and to admire the talented dancers and musicians of all ages! I really enjoyed seeing kids go on stage and basically show off their skills. It's nice to know that Riverdance's succession is guaranteed!

January 2012. Video taken during the Temple Bar TradFest 2012. Ambiance Guaranteed! (3 Mb, be patient :-)

  Protestation
February 2012. Sign in front of Central Bank of Ireland. One of the signs says: "I'm Irish and I'm Standing in Solidarity with the People of Greece". Another leaflet invites the Irish not to pay the household charge.
